6th Season Opens with Two Short Plays

Two Plays

The Hook-Up by Joel Litman

Audition Piece by Gerry Mandel

First Run Theatre presents two new short plays.

The Hook-Up: The Wife and Lover sneak to her house for a tryst and a string of similes until they are interrupted by the Husband and a large steamer trunk. Will there be blood and mayhem or hiding behind lampshades? Is what we are seeing what’s really going on?

The Audition Piece: A group of five actors is gathering to audition for a film to be shot locally. All need the job for different and sometimes unexpected reasons. All are eyeing each other and the director. Who will get cast? All is going fine until the audition and the film is deflected by one actor in an unexpected and unwelcome direction.

First Run Theatre Turns Pro

Brad Slavik, President of First Run Theatre, recently announced that their board of directors approved a proposal that allows the company to become a non-equity professional theater company.  This change becomes effective with the first production of their sixth season, scheduled for the last half of April.

Mr. Slavik, who was elected president in January, 2006, following the death of the company's founder, Donald Weiss, explained that this transition will allow the company to compete effectively with the large number of theater companies in the Greater Saint Louis area for directors, designers, and actors  The main reason the board felt that this was necessary is that, while the other theater companies produce mostly established plays by published playwrights, First Run Theatre is the only Saint Louis company that devotes itself solely to presenting world premiere productions of plays by Saint Louis-area playwrights.  Being able to offer compensation to the actors, designers and directors will, hopefully, attract a larger cadre of non-equity theater professionals to the company.

First Run Theatre's core purpose is to provide a vehicle for Saint Louis-area playwrights to produce original, unpublished, never-produced works, while constantly maintaining a core set of values that includes: professionalism, artistic integrity, education, training, and development.  It strives to provide an environment that offers the playwrights freedom of expression while presenting a quality production to its audiences.  First Run Theatre is an equal-opportunity company that, unless dictated by a script, does not tolerate discrimination based on race, religion, nationality, gender, ethnicity, age, or disability.

The selection process each season begins with an open invitation to all Saint Louis-area playwrights to submit their plays to the company.  These plays are then distributed anonymously to the play-reading committee members.  The members read and critique all plays and recommend at least six plays for a public reading. The readings take place before an audience in January.  Each reading is followed by a Q&A period.  Following the play reading festival, the board of directors meets to choose the plays for the coming season.  The season's plays are presented in April/May, July/August, and January.

As part of its education, training, and development commitment, First Run Theatre offers several seminars each year in the areas of playwriting, play production, auditioning, and acting.  Additionally, through its affiliate, The St. Louis Writer's Group, it offers both new and experienced playwrights the opportunity to have their developing plays publicly read and critiqued.

First Run Theatre also presents a Spectrum of short plays (ten to thirty minutes in length) in June as an additional education tool.  Playwrights are invited to submit these plays separately.  The selection process is the same as for the season's plays, except that there are no public readings of the plays.  A volunteer director auditions volunteer actors for each selected play.  After casting, the plays are rehearsed and then presented on stage for at least three times with a minimal set and minimal costuming.

Writers' Group founder wins playwriting prize

10/07/2007

Mario Farwell, founder and president of the St. Louis Writers' Group, has won the inaugural E. Desmond Lee Playwriting Competition for his drama "The Seamstress of St. Francis Street."

Farwell won in the full-length play category. The Lee award for a one-act play went to Tanesha "Simchah" Walker for "Twenty Years," and the award for a 10-minute play went to Lou Robinson for "Stoned."

The awards are given by the Missouri Historical Society and the Lee Endowed Professorship in African-American Studies at the Center for International Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The competition is open to plays that consider the African-American experience in Missouri, particularly in St. Louis.

The university's theater department will present the winning plays in the Lee auditorium at the Missouri History Museum, 5700 Lindell Boulevard. The shorter plays, "Twenty Years" and "Stoned," will share the bill at 2 p.m. Oct. 13. "The Seamstress of St. Francis Street" runs at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20. The performances are open to the public free of charge.

The Writers' Group meets at 6:30 p.m. Mondays at Big Daddy's, 1000 Sidney Street. This month's meetings feature readings of new plays by Richard A. La Violette, Thelma Urich, Bill Borst and Farwell.

The group is planning a minifestival of one-act plays for its Nov. 5 and 12 meetings, featuring unproduced, unpublished plays by writers who live in the St. Louis area. Scripts can be up to 30 minutes long and may be submitted in hard copy or by e-mail. For more info: 314-772-0743 or www.stlwritersgroup.com. (JN)

Merger of First Run Theatre and St. Louis Writers Group

Both First Run Theatre and The St. Louis Writer's Group share a mission of developing new plays and the nurturing of local writers. The St. Louis Writer's Group works with writers developing their work from initial idea to fully realized script. Writers participate in monthly readings of a new play. Workshops are also held monthly for writers to get feed back from other writers and actors on their works in process.

First Run Theatre has been producing some of the best new plays by local writers for the past 4 years. First Run Theatre fully produces plays at Thomas Hunter Theatre, DeSmet High School. During the production process, plays are fine tuned with the help of a knowledgeable dramaturge and stage readings, so the writer and audience can experience the best possible interpretation of the script. The combination of First Run Theatre and St. Louis Writers Group brings together all the components of play development from idea to fully produced play. This union also offers a home for writers and actors who are dedicated to the development of new and exciting theatre.
