I AM GOAT
A one-act play by Mario Farwell

April 13-15, 20-22 2007
Directed by John Foughty
Original Music by Chris Gibson

Place award in National Black Theatre Festival in North Carolina, 2007.

It is strange love story between two people living on society's edge, but having found happiness and solaces in a life together. Andrew, a young black male, is lost in a world of illusion. He thinks that he is turning into a goat. He is anchored to reality by the subway trains that streak by his window, the clocks that tick away the moments of his existence, and Diedre, a woman he deeply loves. Diedre, lacks, beauty, talent, and intellect, but has an abundance of love and compassion, which she showers on Andrew. Together, they make a pair that can withstand the intrusion of Dr. Carl Martin into their lives. The doctor has tracked down Andrew, one of his patients that escaped from a mental facility years ago. The Doctor sees Andrew as an individual who needs to be brought into alignment with normal standards of behavior. He believes the unorthodox therapy that he gave Andrew in the past is the key to his happiness and ability to function in society. The question is raised "Is it better to live relatively happily in an illusionary world or be transformed into what society has stipulated as normal?" This is where the battle royal begins. Will Andrew and Diedre's determination to remain together win out over Dr. Martin's determination to create a brave new world?
